Megha Sikka, a 14-year-old from Monroe Township, New Jersey, has always had a passion for two things: the well-being of seniors and community service. Observing the loneliness that many seniors face in care centers, she was inspired to create a project that would bridge the generational gap and provide companionship to the elderly.

With the support of CMHQ, Megha’s vision came to life. CMHQ assisted her in handling initial logistics, finding volunteers, and developing engaging programs. Through an initial call and 24/7 chat support on Slack, Megha was able to address any questions related to her initiative, ensuring that her project was well-structured and impactful.

The Senior Smiles initiative involves weekly visits to a local retirement home, where a group of teenage volunteers spend time with the residents. The activities range from playing board games and engaging in arts and crafts to simply providing a listening ear and companionship.

Her efforts have not only brought joy and companionship to the seniors but have also created a sense of fulfillment and empathy among the volunteers.

“Watching elders eat alone at restaurants…makes me emotional, and this is a very dear passion of mine. Being able to make this impact with the help of CMHQ has been truly meaningful to me” says Megha.

For ambitious youth wanting to lead service initiatives in your communities, CMHQ provides curriculums, connections, and support for any questions or concerns you may have, so you can focus on the impact that truly matters. Start leading in your community today.
